Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Recalls How Willie Nelson Gifted Him His First Guitar

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson may be known as a Hollywood powerhouse and former wrestling champion, but his deep-rooted love for country music has always been part of his story. And one of the most memorable moments in his musical journey? The day Willie Nelson gifted him his first guitar.

A Lifelong Love for Country Music

Though his name isn’t often linked to country music, Johnson’s appreciation for the genre runs deep. His recent appearance in Chris Janson’s music video for Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get is just the latest example of his longstanding connection to the country world.

Even as a child, Dwayne was drawn to the voices of country legends. By the time he was eight, he was already singing along to the songs of Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr., Merle Haggard, Johnny Paycheck, and Vern Gosdin. His passion only grew stronger when he moved to Nashville as a teenager, dreaming—at least for a time—of making a name for himself in the country music world. Though life took him in a different direction, Johnson has never lost his admiration for the genre.

Meeting Willie Nelson—and Receiving a Priceless Gift

Years later, fate led Johnson to a wrestling match in Texas, where Willie Nelson happened to be filming a music video. The two met for the first time on Nelson’s legendary tour bus, where they struck up an immediate friendship—one that would last for years.

“I was just such a huge fan, and we stayed in touch,” Johnson recalled in an interview with Country Now. “He sent me my first guitar. It’s a Trigger guitar—Martin makes like a hundred of ‘em.”

This reference to Nelson’s famous Martin N-20 classical guitar, “Trigger,” highlights just how special the gift was. It wasn’t just any guitar—it was a nod to Nelson’s own musical legacy, making it an unforgettable token of friendship.

Chris Janson’s Connection to the Story

Hearing Johnson’s story, Chris Janson—a country star in his own right—jumped in to share his own sentimental guitar memory. He revealed that the only musician he ever asked for an autograph was Merle Haggard, who signed his gut-string guitar.

Janson explained, “It was a much cheaper model, but it was my pawn shop guitar that I spent $25 on in 2014. In 2015, I wrote Buy Me a Boat on it, and by 2016, I had a number one song with it.”

An Unexpected Friendship

Much like his friendship with Willie Nelson, Johnson and Chris Janson hit it off instantly. The two first met in a parking lot in 2022, bonding over their shared love for classic country and their experiences trying to break into Nashville’s music scene. They particularly connected over Hank Williams Jr.’s The Blues Man, a song both hold close to their hearts.

Their conversation ultimately led to Johnson making an appearance in Janson’s music video for Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get. Filmed in a Texas field, the two spent hours on set, enjoying the moment without pressure or strict schedules.

A Future Performance at the Grand Ole Opry

The collaboration left such a lasting impact that Janson extended an invitation for Johnson to perform at the Grand Ole Opry—and Johnson accepted.

“Yes, the Opry performance is going to happen,” Janson confirmed. “It’s going to be a very special moment. And I already, in my heart, have some things planned that are going to make it even more meaningful.”

For Johnson, stepping onto the Opry stage is more than just a performance—it’s a homecoming of sorts. Having spent part of his youth in Nashville, his connection to the city and its music is genuine. As Janson put it, “It’s going to be about the music, about friendship, and about our country.”

Though best known for his wrestling and acting careers, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s love for country music has never faded. Now, with a legendary guitar gifted by Willie Nelson and a special Grand Ole Opry performance on the horizon, his country roots are coming full circle.
